notes on “THE HELP”
Thought “The Help” movie was great. But, the book was definitely way better. I think Stockett really respected her characters and the historical context as noted in the book’s acknowledgements. I think she is courageous for writing about a terrible, turbulent time in this country and I think it’s RIDICULOUS that people are calling her a racist. I’m just really over everyone being HYPER-sensitive about PC bullshit. Life is not PC. And it was DEFINITELY not in the 1960s. If you want to see a movie or read a book about what it was like to be black in Mississippi in the 1960s then please, write one, be my guest. Otherwise, stop bitching about it on MSNBC.
On a similar note, last night my mom got LIVID over a 7-11 commercial in which a guy said “OK Ladies” to a group of other men. Like, REALLY MOM? I totally respect the feminists that are my mother and her generation, but to me feminism is not about splitting hairs and nitpicking until we have a completely bland, colorless, sexless, genderless society. I like colors. I like genders (not just 2!). I LKE SEX! (And I like that other people like sex, by themselves and/or with all kinds of people!) I like offensive jokes on occasion. If I have to live in a word without all those things just so no one gets their feelings hurt? BOOOO.
